Overview of 8 Activities within SCOUT-O3

The eight SCOUT-O3 activities are designed to provide the essential information which, when integrated, will allow the prediction of ozone, climate and UV over the next decades, our overall project goal. To enable reliable predictions, substantial improvements of the representation of key processes in the models are required. This is the general goal of Activities 2 to 6. Activities 2 (Tropics), 3 (Extratropics), and 4 (UV-Radiation) directly focus on objectives that are needed for the model improvements. Activity 6 (Chemistry Transport Modeling) is an integral part of Activities 2 to 4 and contributes to the strong links between them. Activity 5 (Chemistry and Particles) focuses on the fundamental understanding of chemical and microphysical processes and is needed by all other activities. The predictions will be carried out using coupled chemistry climate models in Activity 1. Activity 7 provides a central database and ensures coordinated public relation work. A professional project management is supplied in Activity 8.

The diagram shows how all activities interact with to one another, and how activities 2 to 8 all feed into activity 1. The shorter squares are activities; ovals are individual objectives; and tall squares are improvements of model represenation of individual processes.
